RV DIY Q&A – ST Tires for Trailer Applications

rv Trip preparationQuestion: I am confused about what type of tires to put on my travel trailer. Some folks tell me to use LT tires and others say to use ST tires. Can you help clear this issue up?

Mark’s Answer: This is one of those controversial topics that people tend to disagree on, but I can offer some basic information to give you a better understanding of the topic and hopefully help you make an informed buying decision.

Tire manufacturers use designations like ‘P’ and ‘LT’ to identify the type of vehicle a tire is intended to be used on.  As a very basic explanation (there is more to it) the prefix letters on a tire like ‘P’ and ‘LT’ represent tires designed primarily for ‘passenger’ and ‘light truck’ service. Vehicles are designed for different uses and based on this require tires constructed for the intended use.

Trailers, like other vehicles, have their own set of requirements when it comes to tires.

ST tire designation: ‘ST’ stands for ‘Special Trailer’ tire. ST tires are designed for use on trailer axle positions only. They are not designed for the load or traction requirements of a drive or steering axle on other vehicles.  ST tires have strengthened sidewalls to prevent the tire from rolling under the rim in turns and when cornering. All ST tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph.  ST tires feature materials and construction designed to meet the higher load requirements and demands trailer towing presents.

As I mentioned earlier there is much more involved with this discussion, but that is the basic difference between ST tires and P or LT tires. For more information check out my article titled, Trailer Towing ST Tires Vs. LT Tires.

RV DIY Q&A – RV LP Gas Tips & Tricks

LP Gas CylindersQuestion: We plan to camp in our RV for  several days at a time, in remote areas, is there any way to calculate how much LP gas we will use?

Mark’s Answer: There is a way to roughly calculate LP gas usage, but you need to know how much LP gas you have on-board when the LP gas cylinders or tank is full. Remember a propane cylinder or tank is full at 80% of its capacity to allow for expansion.

The first step is to multiply your LP gas container capacity using one of these formulas, (gallons or pounds), to determine the container BTU capacity.
• BTUs per gallon = 91,502
• BTUs per pound = 21,548

Next, divide your container BTU capacity by the total BTU demand of the appliances you are using. BTU appliance demand can usually be found on the appliance itself, or in the appliance owner’s manual. This will give you an idea of how long you can expect your LP gas supply to last.

For example, if your RV propane container holds 14 gallons of LP gas when it’s full, multiply 14 X 91,502. The result is 1,281,028. Now divide this number by the total BTU demand of any appliances you will be using. Let’s say, for the sake of an example, the total demand will be 43,800 BTU s.  In this case you would have approximately 29 hours of use.

However, keep in mind that the amount of LP gas in the container and varying temperatures affect these calculations. This is especially true in cold weather. In temperatures below zero degrees the per hour container BTU capacity can be reduced by 50% or more.

Calculating LP gas usage can give you a general idea of how long you can use your LP gas fired appliances before needing to locate a propane filling station.

Mark Polk

RV generator When I was in the military I was in charge of some very large maintenance operations. One of those maintenance assignments was with the 82nd Signal Battalion. In addition to a large wheeled vehicle fleet we had over 300 generators to service and maintain. You might say this was my early indoctrination in generator care and maintenance.

When I retired from the Army I went to work for a RV dealership. When camping season arrived I noticed the service department was booked with appointments for generators that either wouldn’t start, or if they did start had that all too familiar surging sound. I immediately knew this was a result of letting the generator sit in storage without starting and exercising the generator.

It might seem odd, but the lack of use is one of the biggest problems with gasoline generators. Fuel can start to break down in as little as one month. When this happens the fuel starts to varnish and gum up resulting in hard starting and surging problems.

Fuel related problems are the number one reason for exercising the generator, but there are other reasons too. Moisture build-up can result in damage to the generator. When you exercise the generator it heats up the generator windings and eliminates moisture build-up. Last but certainly not least exercising the generator helps lubricate the engine seals and internal components, and helps prevent carbon build-up.
